Window Treatments: Elevating Your Space with Curtains and Sheers

Window treatments - Curtains and sheers

Window treatments not only add a stylish touch to your space but also offer practical benefits such as privacy and insulation. With a wide range of options available, you can easily update your home with elegance and give it that final design flourish. In this article, we’ll explore the world of curtains and sheers, providing you with inspiring ideas to transform your windows.

Sheers on a Track: Soften the Ambience

If you’re looking to create a soft and ethereal atmosphere while still allowing natural light to filter in, sheers on a track are an excellent choice. These delicate and minimalist curtains offer a gentle diffusion of light, adding a touch of elegance to any room. Sheers have the advantage of dimming the natural light without over-encumbering the window with excessive fabric, colors, or patterns. They are particularly useful when privacy is not an issue during evening hours, creating a romantic ambiance.

Window treatments - Sheers on a track

Sheers are also a great solution for hiding an unsightly view, such as a neighboring wall or alleyway. The sheer fabric allows you to maintain a connection with the outside world while adding a layer of privacy. Naturally, you always have the option of opening them partially or 100% to let in more light and enjoy the view.

Window treatments - Sheers on a track

To add a touch of design and enhance the visual appeal, consider adding decorative panels at each end of the sheer curtains. These panels act as an extension over the wall, giving the illusion of a wider window and adding a sophisticated touch to the overall look. By combining sheers and decorative panels, you can create a layered effect that adds depth and visual interest to your windows.

If you feel the need for greater privacy or light blockage, you can also add a second pole with an opaque fabric curtain. This allows you to have the perfect balance of light and privacy throughout the day and night.

With the option to adjust each layer individually, you have complete control over the amount of light and privacy you desire.

Design Tip: Choose sheers in a color that complements your existing decor. Opt for neutral tones like white, cream, or light gray for a timeless and versatile look. Alternatively, experiment with soft pastel hues or delicate patterns to add a subtle pop of color and visual interest to your space.

Heavy Curtains: Ultimate Insulation and Privacy

Window treatments - Heavy curtains

When it comes to insulation, privacy, and light control, heavy curtain fabrics are your go-to option. The thicker the fabric, the better the insulation it provides against the cold of winter and the excessive heat of summer. Heavy curtains create a cozy and intimate atmosphere, reducing drafts and helping to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home.

In addition to their insulation properties, heavy curtains offer exceptional privacy by blocking outside views and preventing prying eyes from peering into your living spaces. They also have an acoustic factor, reducing external noise and creating a tranquil environment inside.

Design Tip: Opt for velvet or thick, woven fabrics for a luxurious and opulent look. Consider choosing curtains with a thermal lining to enhance their insulating properties further. Experiment with rich colors like deep blues, jewel tones, or warm earthy shades to add depth and create a dramatic focal point in your room.

For Arched Windows: Embrace the Angle

Arched windows add architectural interest and uniqueness to a space, but they can pose challenges when it comes to window treatments. To embrace the angle of arched windows, treat them as if they were angled like regular windows.

For rooms with higher ceilings, suspend the curtain rods as high as possible to create a sense of grandeur and make the most of the window’s height. By doing so, you can enhance the appearance of the architecture and create an impressive visual impact.

To ensure ease of use, choose a sliding system that operates smoothly and effortlessly. For ultra-high curtain poles, a motorized system offers the convenience of remote-controlled opening and closing, allowing you to effortlessly adjust the curtains and control the amount of light entering your space.

Design Tip: When selecting curtains for arched windows, opt for fabrics with a flowing drape to complement the graceful curves of the window. Consider using patterned or textured fabrics to add visual interest and draw attention to the unique shape of the windows.

For Modern Bay Windows: Privacy and Style

Modern bay windows are a stunning architectural feature that floods a room with natural light and offers panoramic views. However, they can also present challenges when it comes to privacy and light control. To address these concerns while maintaining the sleek and modern aesthetic of your bay windows, it’s essential to choose the right window treatments.

Curtains that are doubled with a backing fabric are an excellent solution to guarantee 100% privacy, especially during the evening hours when people may be walking or driving by your home. The backing fabric not only provides privacy but also offers additional insulation, making your space more energy-efficient.

Window treatments - For traditional bay windows

Opt for warm and inviting fabrics that complement the overall decor and create a cozy atmosphere. Ceiling tracks are the perfect choice for bay window treatments as they provide a sleek and discreet appearance, allowing the curtains to glide effortlessly along the track.

Design Tip: When selecting curtains for modern bay windows, consider using floor-to-ceiling panels to create a sense of height and make the most of the expansive window space. Choose fabrics in neutral tones or modern prints to maintain a contemporary and cohesive look.

We hope these design strategies inspire you to transform your windows using curtains and sheers. Whether you opt for billowing sheers, heavy curtains, or specific treatments for arched or bay windows, window treatments can enhance the overall look and functionality of your home.

Bathroom Trends for 2023

When it comes to sharing design trends with my readers, I always feel a little ambivalent. I am not a huge fan of trends, especially when it comes to investments such as renovations. I tend to recommend colors and finishes in keeping with the home’s character and age, as well as the property’s resale value and future appeal to home buyers.

Usually, it is wise to invest in design components that will stand the test of time. Having said that, there are ways of integrating current trends that DO stand the test of time. ‘Trendy’ elements can be balanced out with classic features to create what we call ‘transitional’ design. Here are some ideas and valuable tips to inspire you.

Bathroom Trends for 2023

Industrial-style plumbing fixtures

Industrial-style plumbing fixtures - Bathroom Trends for 2023

Yes, Industrial design is still very popular! Although industrial-style design is not everyone’s cup of tea, I can assure that in urban areas it is still very high in demand. One of my favourite plumbing fixture collections is from Watermark in the UK. Other lines are available, but nobody does industrial style plumbing like Watermark. Brushed brass or gold fixtures look fabulous with stone, concrete, and even wood features. They are always a conversation starter, and frankly very fun to use.

Smart features for bathrooms

Bathroom components and intelligent technology has evolved at a rapid pace in the last few years. Showers are available with LCD panels that allow you to control temperature, steam options, music and chromotherapy.  You can program water-flow in your shower as well as program your toilet to clean itself. This steam shower we designed for a client also includes a wireless Blue Tooth shower head and Netflix streaming, as well as Chromotherapy.

Patchwork tiles - Bathroom Trends for 2023

Patchwork tiles

These Mediterranean-style tiles have literally been around for thousands of years.  They made a big comeback about 5 years ago and are still going strong. They are available in a range of colours, many of which are cement. They usually come in 6’’ x 6’’ or 8’’ x 8’’ sizes. Because the pattern is very busy, it is important to balance out the pattern with simpler surroundings. Also keep in mind, less is more; pick a wall or the floor, but not both.

Spacious and curb-free ‘Italian’ showers

For the shower, several options are out there, but there is more and more demand for Italian walk-in showers with glass enclosures as they are seamless and minimalist. These require a linear drain for quick evacuation of water seeing as there is no ‘curb’ or ‘ledge’ to hold the water in. It is possible that the floor may have to be raised (less than an inch) to accommodate the slope needed for the quick water evacuation, but it is worth it. Once my clients learn about the option of a curb-free shower, most of them jump on the idea. There is literally more room in this type of shower, and as we all know, when it comes to bathroom square footage, every inch counts!

Freestanding bathtubs - Bathroom Trends for 2023

Freestanding bathtubs

Almost all the bathrooms we are designing include a free-standing bath as well as a walk-in shower. If our clients have an alcove bath and shower combined, we need considerably more space to separate the shower from the bath, especially if our clients are also requesting a large walk-in shower. Most of the time we can steal a bit of space from an adjoining room and/or closet or hallway. The only time I advise against a free-standing bath is for the washing of young infants. The sides of the free-standing baths are too high for parents to reach over, and therefore impractical and unsafe. In these situations, we design an updated and modernised bath-shower combination with the bath side at a more reasonable height.

Black accents and plumbing fixtures

Black and white bathrooms have been popular for at least 60 years. The wonderful component that can now be added to bathroom design is the availability of black plumbing fixtures as well as black accessories such as towel rings, soap dispensers, paper holders and more. Black bathroom fixtures and accessories look great with any colour palette or bathroom style. In this black and white bathroom, the clients desired a whimsical and bright bathroom with dramatic contrasts.

Gold accents and plumbing fixtures

The beautiful thing about warm metals is just that…they are warm! That means they play well off cool tones such as marble, stone, grey tile, white, neutral beiges, blues and even black…all of which are hues and tones that most homeowners are choosing as their colour palette for every room, not just the bathroom.

The ‘gold accents’ are actually available in different textures, and slightly different nuances, which is why you should make sure to buy all your gold, bronze or champagne plumbing fixtures from the same collection or manufacturer.

Laundry Room Trends for 2023

Laundry rooms don’t get a lot of attention because they’re often located in a closet or the basement. Whether you have a big or small laundry room, here are some practical ideas to inspire you.

Water and bleach can damage certain finishes such as wood or porous stone. You should choose waterproof materials like ceramic, linoleum or vinyl. Don’t forget to use epoxy tile grout for the floor tiles and install backsplash tiles behind the washer and dryer for total protection and easy maintenance.

A space in your bathroom dedicated to the washer and dryer may be a great space-saver, however, access to the machines may be a challenge if the bathroom and laundry area are tight and cluttered. For this reason, make sure to plan functional closed storage such as cabinets or decorative baskets.

Laundry Room Trends for 2023

Make function a priority

Laundry Room Trends for 2023

Having a laundry zone on an upper floor with the bedrooms and clothes hampers is practical, but the noise may cause a disturbance.

Having it on the main floor offers the possibility of multi-tasking; doing laundry while preparing meals, but if it is an open common area, extra effort is required for keeping the laundry area uncluttered with a lot of hide-away storage.

Finally, a laundry zone in the basement is more discrete, but requires many more trips up and down the stairs. You also may miss hearing the buzzer.

Add colour!

A bright and refreshing colour on the walls, the door or the cabinetry can really add a lot of charm and personality even if the laundry area is in the basement, a hidden corner, or a hallway. Glossy paint, currently the rage, also multiplies the existent light and provides a low-maintenance and washable surface.

For a winning colour palette go ahead with the majority of the space in a neutral tone with hits of a dynamic colour as an accent on certain elements.
The objective: A nice dose of motivation, so that tackling the hum drum chores gets stepped up!

Laundry Room Trends for 2023

Optimise every square inch!

Laundry Room Trends for 2023

If you’re lucky enough to have an entire room dedicated to laundry, add a built-in cabinet or shelves to maximize storage. And, while you’re at it, why not add baskets to hold dirty laundry, a pull-out shelf for drying clothes flat, a hanging rack or a retractable ironing board.

Keep in mind that it’s probably a good idea to have various baskets handy in your laundry room.A laundry basket on wheels or rails, especially one with multiple bins, will help you sort and store dirty laundry and help you save time. Your clothes will be sorted and ready to be transferred to the washing machine.

Finally, set up a small basket near your washer and dryer, so you have a handy spot for the contents of pockets like keys and change or even mismatched socks!

A well thought-out corner

A drop-down wall-mounted clothes support or a pole over your washer and dryer are very practical. No longer necessary to confiscate the bathroom shower pole for a whole day. If you don’t have enough hidden storage, go ahead and install cabinets with drawers or shelves near or over the machines. There you can hide away all of your laundry and cleaning products.

Add to the wall pretty hooks for hanging your ironing board. All of these decorative elements will add charm to your laundry zone. For help or more ideas for your laundry zone, click here:

Bathroom Trends

When it comes to renovating bathrooms, the design possibilities are as great as your imagination and your budget will allow! The options in bathroom design are almost unlimited.

Consider the various trends and choose the ones that inspire you the most. The role of the bathroom has evolved very much and it is now one of the most functional rooms in the home.

Bathroom Trends

Functional storage

Functional storage

Increase the amount of storage and try to optimize every square inch that is available. The compartments in drawers, storage cabinets and shelves are sought after more than ever and are part of a well thought-out bathroom.

Stowing away your personal items inside closed storage is a good way of contributing to an uncluttered bathroom. The cleaner the space is, the bigger it appears.

Patterns

The minimalist styled bathrooms are always trendy, but many desire a contemporary bathroom that is more personalized.

White, grey and warmer neutrals are still popular, but many of my clients are daring in choosing bolder patterns, especially in chevron, hexagon or Mediterranean-style motifs.

Patterns

Statuario marble

Statuario marble

Marble is making its ‘come-back’ in 2018 for bathrooms. If your desire is to have a space that is sophisticated, clean and classic, then choose this beautiful natural stone, or to save money, opt for the budget friendly imitation marble tiles or slabs.

Rest assured, there is no need to empty your bank account. A variety of materials, much more affordable, have taken on the Statuario appearance. The result: Its elegance has contributed to ‘stepping up a notch’ many bathrooms, even the more budget-friendly ones!

Tiles

For showers, walls and floors, tiles are still very popular, including porcelain and ceramic. Very trendy right now are various geometric patterns, some with relief, some tone on tone or multi-coloured, and even in patchwork patterns.

There are ceramics on the market that imitate higher-end materials like wood and marble or even concrete. Apart from ceramics, natural stones are preferred, such as quartz and marble.

Tiles

Spacious showers

Spacious showers

For the shower, several options are out there, but there is more and more demand for large tiled showers with glass. Also very popular is the fully equipped multi-functional shower including the integration of a bench as well as a steam system.

Don’t forget the ever important storage by adding tile shelves or a niche to hold shampoo, shower gel and soap. There are even wall-mounted soap and shampoo distributors, such as those in hotel rooms, that can be installed to save space and which turn out to be an eco-friendly choice when buying bulk products to refill them.

Freestanding bathtubs

After having been put aside in the last few years, the bathtub has come back even stronger by being more luxurious, more comfortable and offering more space for the ultimate pampering experience.

The freestanding bathtub is popular and is available in a multitude of shapes: square, oval, round, asymmetrical or rectangular. To maximize the wow- factor, it can be installed in the center of the room if you have the space.

Freestanding bathtubs

Imitation-wood tiles

Imitation-wood tiles

Increasingly popular in Quebec, ‘imitation-wood’ porcelain tiles are a great floor or wall covering that offer the natural beauty of wood and the technical qualities of low-maintenance porcelain.

This type of tile was conceived to be durable and yet it has the natural sophistication of high-quality wood. Choose this product if you want an easy-to-maintain, rustic and inviting bathroom. Consider using it in the shower if you like, it is 100% waterproof.

Hardwood in the bathroom

In the context of a modern bathroom, wood brings a more classic side to the decor by balancing opposing styles. A multitude of types, grains and finishes are available, catering to everybody’s taste.

Contrary to what one might think, this material breathes very well and naturally absorbs humidity, making it a very popular option for the bathroom. However, it is necessary to wipe off the accumulation of water at the exit of the shower or the bath to avoid its deterioration over the long term.

As with any major renovation project, sound planning is required. Several points should be considered before you start and you should take advantage of all the resources at your disposal. For more ideas for your next bathroom project:

Industrial Style Design for 2023

More than a passing trend

Industrial-style design for interiors is definitely here to stay, particularly in Metropolitan areas. The visual appeal and charm of industrial style lies in its ability to showcase utilitarian surfaces, stripped back architecture and salvaged objects. If you’re looking to live with raw and second-hand furnishings, then you will love the options available to you!

Industrial Style Design for 2023
Industrial Style Design for 2023

One of the fabulous benefits of an industrial space is that the materials used can be as affordable as you like! Usually, industrial-style design is pared down to the essentials so it doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are a few industrial design ideas to help you keep things cozy, casual and stylish!

Reclaimed objects and flea-market finds

Reclaimed objects and flea-market finds - Industrial Style Design for 2023

Furnishings in an industrial home are minimal and no-nonsense. They embrace strong, clean lines without excess. A great way to embrace industrial style is to mix and match new pieces with reclaimed ones. Repurpose materials such as wood crates, old ladders or cinder blocks and turn these things into shelving units, side tables or stand-alone pieces.

Industrial Colours and tones

Industrial Colours and tones - Industrial Style Design for 2023

If you are considering an industrial colour scheme, monochromatic is honoured, though colours with a cool undertone are also favoured. For background and wall colours, think neutral grays or blues, but for accents, you could go as far as tangerine or fuchsia, or their dark and moody cousins plum and burnt orange. If you are sticking to neutrals, we would suggest choosing a variety of shades to keep the space from appearing one-dimensional.

Since this style is so focused on industrial textures such as concrete and metals, there is generally enough variation present that homeowners can work with a monochromatic palette. If you paint and are finding rooms feeling flat, consider adding a statement piece or something tactile to incorporate depth.

Industrial Style Design for 2023

Use texture instead of colour

Use texture instead of colour - Industrial Style Design for 2023

Sophisticated and classy design elements should not appear in the industrial setup, and comfortable decor should come in solid, neutral colours as well as natural textures. If you’re using throw pillows or rugs, keep colours muted and neutral; consider woven wool with lots of texture. Furniture should be of minimal design, wrought iron bed frames or super-casual seating.

Keep it Edgy

Keep it Edgy - Industrial Style Design for 2023

Industrial style means erasing the line between trash and treasure. Remember, a little bit of wear adds character to this concept. If you find something that would feel odd in a traditional home, then it would likely fit right into an industrial one! As we’ve mentioned, metals are a key feature of industrial style, so consider adding tin, steel, iron or aluminum in some way into the space.

Metal, iron and wood

Metal, iron and wood - Industrial Style Design for 2023

Metal will create a cool and sleek functionality, so think about exposed ductwork, aluminum countertops or steel stairwells. However, stay away from warm metals such as gold or brass, and choose cold metals with a matte finish. Stone is another beautiful way to break up any monotony and add some character and depth to those industrial spaces!

Space and lots of it

As industrial style originated in warehouses and factories, it privileges big and open spaces. An open floor plan is one of the trademarks of this style. High ceilings are another factor but are obviously home-dependant. If you are working with an open concept, make sure to break up long or large expanses of space with well-thought-out furniture placement. Create unification to avoid a jarring effect. Make sure to use area rugs to define each zone.

Space and lots of it - Industrial Style Design for 2023

Back to the essentials

Back to the essentials - Industrial Style Design for 2023

In an industrial room, the infrastructure should be on full display instead of covered up and hidden. Mechanical materials should be exposed. Unfinished walls, bare windows as well as exposed beams are all key ways to channel industrial style, as we’re looking for any means to create the idea of a space being rough around the edges.

Wood beams

Wood beams - Industrial Style Design for 2023

Wood is another way to help warm up a space (visually, not literally). If those steel ceiling beams just aren’t cutting it for you, consider covering them in wood to give your space an aged look. If you are considering a home renovation project, think of ways to renovate in order to bring industrial details into focus!

Industrial-style floors

Industrial-style floors - Industrial Style Design for 2023

Embrace all the raw features in your home. If you already have concrete floors, you’re one step ahead of the game. Don’t cover those babies up! Consider getting your concrete floor honed or polished to give them a modern feel. Consider defining the different areas with fabulous and inviting area rugs.
